Clarification on the word "idol" and how it's used to normalize that sin in k-popThe word "idol" in biblical terms means putting anything (family, friends, a favorite celebrity, i mean ANYTHING!) above God. It's ok to value anything but once you put it above God, that's where it gets dangerous! Why? Because idolatry separates you from what God is trying to tell you. It causes you to be blind from reality. It also becomes obsession which can reach dangerous levels if you don't keep it under control (like duh, why do these saesangs exist?). even if you're not saesang, too much idolatry over someone that doesn't even know your existence is not ok.The word idol is often used to describe the k-pop artists. However, it's also used to sugarcoat the sin because they expect people to see them as gods (newsflash: THEY'RE NOT! They are just as human as we are). They use that word to lead blind people to worship those artists instead of just seeing them as normal humans. BTS once said (during their Arirang comeback concert) that they don't see themselves as better than us. They humble themselves as just regular imperfect humans. Only Jesus is perfect. What's most infuriating is when fans pretend those idols are their boyfriends or girlfriends. Here's the thing, and if the truth offends you, that's your problem: THOSE ARTISTS DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU! And you don't even know who those people are when the cameras aren't on. There's a very good chance they're not who you think. Even if you're just "joking" around, lying is a sin and God doesn't want us being delusional. Can you love those artists from a distance? Of course! But DO NOT pretend to have an intimate relationship with them in your delusional head.If you can't control your idolatry, maybe just stop being a fan altogether.
How to avoid the idolatry trap while still enjoying K-pop1. Know where God and K-pop stands in your life. Ask yourself these questions: Do I choose Jesus in every aspect in my life? Can I control myself when I listen or watch this artist? Is it someone I can listen or watch without getting tempted into normalizing sin?2. Do NOT listen to their secular songs or anything with explicit lyrics. It doesn't matter how much you enjoy their songs but if it glorifies sin or has the explicit symbol next to it, best not to listen to it at all. Music is a window to the soul. If it has sinful lyrics, there's a very good chance you'll become that very thing you're trying to avoid. Not to mention you might end up inviting a demon into your home if you're not careful!3. Turn off their content and take a break if you're finding yourself getting close to idolatry. Be aware and mindful of how often you consume their content. If you find yourself going to them first instead of Jesus, turn them off and step away. It's all about control and discipline.
Lukewarm vs. Biblical Christianity
Lukewarm
- Worships God on Sundays but treats every other day like He doesn't exist (ex: getting drunk, hanging out with the wrong crowds, etc.)
- Chooses which sins are "ok" and which are not
- Keeps silent about truth instead of standing firm, caring more about being loved by the world
- Seeks approval of others instead of serving the Lord first
- Only nitpicks certain Bible verses that fits their agenda rather than reading the entire chapter or surrounding verses for context
- Believes in God but disobeys His word, thinking they can do whatever they want without consequence
- Follows a fake version of Jesus where they think He loves everyone and accepts them for who they are but they avoid the call for repentance
- Cares about self more than what pleases God
- Feels no remorse after sinning, abusing God's grace with the mindset of, "It's fine, God will forgive me"
- Uses God as an emergency contact instead of a Father and Lord
Biblical
- Puts Jesus first in every aspect of their life, prioritizing reading their Bible and daily prayer
- Is bold in their faith, not caring what the world will think because God's opinion matters more than anything
- Rebukes sin and warns people about it, even if it makes them uncomfortable. Sits with sinners but doesn't sin with them (Matthew 9:10-13)
- Serves others and puts people above themselves, even when nobody's watching (don't be a Pharisee!)
- Loves and forgives one another because Jesus loves and forgives
- Has a true relationship with Jesus and is secure enough to know that if they have Him, they don't need anything else
- Acknowledges they are a sinner in need of a Savior, coming to God first when falling short
- Denies themselves daily
- Worships Jesus any chance they get, even outside of church
- Pleases God and does what is right no matter how unpopular it might be
- Loves Jesus by obeying His commandments
- Knows that God's will is better than their own
I'm New to Christianity, Where Do I Start?- Here's a reading plan so you can have a starting point on where to begin in the Bible. ALWAYS start with the gospels first because it's important to get to know Jesus, who He is, and what He has done on earth
- Make reading your Bible a daily habit. Challenge yourself to reach for your Bible instead of your phone each morning and let it be the last thing you reach for before heading to bed. Reading your Bible daily (even if you're only able to for a few minutes) keeps you connected to God and the more you read it, the better you'll recognize His voice and have a better understanding about what truth looks like
- Throw away any sinful desires. Whether that'd be secular or horror movies, songs with explicit lyrics, horoscope on your social media profile (yes, astrology IS demonic!), replacing junk food with God-given food (produce, meat, etc.) or removing people that don't lead you to Jesus
- Understand and acknowledge the 7 deadly sins. There are way more sins that God has warned us in the Bible but here are the main ones to be aware of: Lust, Wrath, Gluttony, Pride (why Christians should never celebrate pride month!), Sloth, Greed, and Envy
- Put aside time for God. We always claim our lives are "busy" but clearly you had time to scroll on your phone, check unimportant emails, etc. What about Jesus? He wants to hear from you, too, whether that's going into a quiet room for a 1 on 1 talk, reading your Bible during your lunch break, or listening to worship music in the car. Always put God first!
- Guard your heart! Not everything you see around you is beneficial for your spirit. Ask yourself these things about the content you watch or listen to: Do they please God? Does it promote sin? Is it demonic? If those things don't glorify God, get that outta here (Dang Matt Smith reference hehe)
- Start a worship playlist. There's so many great Christian artists you can listen to. Like Forrest Frank, Josiah Queen, Phil Wickham, Chris Tomlin, LOST AND FOUND, and many more. Yes, there is a such thing as Christian Kpop! Some artists include: GON, JI MI SUN, Zero, Ally Minju, and more! Hallelujah!
- Attempt a Sabbath Day. We live in a world where people crave constant entertainment or being busy all the time. God asks us to be still in His presence and put aside time to be with Him. Choose 1 day each week to turn off all entertainment (your phone, tv, etc.). Use this day to talk to God in the stillness, spend time with your family, pick up old hobbies you've abandoned years ago. You'll see how much God works when you put down all the distractions and entertainment for 1 full day.
What does Biblical love actually look likeThe word "love" has been twisted since we started affirming sexual sin like lgbtq, lust, selfish desires, etc. Let's look at the difference between worldly vs. biblical love:
Worldly
- Love is a feeling
- Love is conditional, only loving them if they make you happy
- Love is what they can do for you. It's transactional
- Love is proven by grand gestures (trips, public declarations, etc.)
- Love is comfortable, accepting each other for who they are
- If the person wrongs you, you hold it against them forever
Biblical
- Love is a choice, not a feeling (1 Corinthians 13:4)
- Love is serving someone else first (Philippians 2:3)
- Love is selfless and sacrifical without expecting anything in return (1 John 3:16)
- Love is willing to lay down your life for someone else (John 15:13)
- Love is honest and tells the truth, even if it's uncomfortable (Ephesians 4:15)
- Love is forgiveness, even when they wronged you (Colossians 3:13)
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows an overview of what love looks like: "Love is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices in whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance." Jesus was also a perfect example of what love looks like. His love is also unconditional, meaning the love never goes away no matter how much someone might mess up.Is your love biblical? does it involve sacrifice, putting others and God first? Are you honest with your loved ones if they're not doing something right? Do you have people doing the same for you? Or is your love worldly? Is it selfish? The kind that affirms and supports sin (supporting sin is a sin btw!)? Encourages the wrong things? Conditional where one disagreement means it's over? I challenge you to self-reflect and see how you show your love to others and see what you can do to make sure that love leads your loved ones to God. Always ask yourself this before talking: Am I leading them to God or am I leading them to hell?
How to be a better Christian- Stop swearing! It'll kill your faith with God! (Proverbs 18:21)
- FULLY surrender to God. He knows what's best for you (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- Be kind to one another and pray for them, even if they wronged you (Ephesians 4:32)
- Repent for your sins!! Be truthful and genuine when repenting. Seek forgiveness and mercy and turn away from sin! Go and sin no more (John 8:11, Acts 3:19, Psalms 51:1, 2 Corinthians 7:10)
- Spread the Gospel. Whether it's writing down scripture on sticky notes and handing them to people or leaving baby Jesus figures around school or your workplace (Matthew 28:19-20)
- Be humble! Always think you are good as your are and God doesn't expect you to be always best! See others as better than yourself so you can put them first and serve them (1 Peter 5:6, Philippians 2:3)
- Follow the 10 commandments (Exodus 20:3-17) and the 2 greatest commandments: "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind" (Deuteronomy 6:5) and "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18)
- Pretend Jesus is in the room with you. If you wouldn't do it in front of Him, then don't do it at all
- Do not tolerate the sin that is around you! We've normalized sin to the point that you are considered "weird" if you try to expose it and calling people to repent from it. You can love the person that is committing those sins but do not affirm what they're doing. If you need to talk about their sin, set them aside somewhere private 1 on 1 and kindly tell them that what they're doing is not pleasing God. Don't be rude, don't interrogate. Instead, be gentle but stay honest
- Stop caring what people think. Jesus is literally perfect but people still hated on Him. The only opinion that matters is God's (Proverbs 29:25, Galatians 1:10, Matthew 10:28)

If the Bible calls it sin, YOUR OPINION DOES NOT MATTER. We live in a world where sin and lukewarm Christianity is considered "normal" and Biblical Christianity and obedience to God is considered "extreme". That's the devil's goal right there. Not everyone is a child of God (like many people claim). You are either a child of God who reflects the light of Jesus or you are a child of the devil who chooses to live a life in rebellion, darkness, believing they're allowed to live however they want, lost with no knowledge of God's truth + having no clue about what they're standing for, only doing it because it's the "popular" thing (John 8:44, 1 John 3:10). Sin is what separates us from Jesus and it will start destroying you overtime, TRAPPING YOU and making you a slave. BUT, you don't have to live this way. That's why Christ died for you. To free us FROM the sins that are trapping us. We need a God-fearing world, especially with how things are nowadays. We need to bring Jesus back in everything around us. At schools, businesses, families, every nation, and we need more churches that are not afraid to call out the sin and tell people truth, no matter how unpopular it is. Spread the gospel, show the love of Jesus through your Godly lifestyle, bring heaven to earth through worship, and call people to repentance. There's so many lost souls out there in need of a Savior. We want to see heaven crowded with billions of souls!
